B142 & B143 a.k.a Barnards E
Details
Barnard 142 and Barnard 143, also known as Barnard’s E, are impressive examples of dark nebulae in the constellation Aquila. Whether the name is a reference to Edward Barnard’s first names remains unclear. In fact, these nebulae resemble more of a C shape. Dark nebulae appear dark against the background of stars, hence their name. However, in very long exposure photographs, the faintest extensions of these gas and dust formations can be seen. It is also visible how the starlight shines through these faint extensions of the nebulae, making them appear somewhat brownish. Only in the innermost, densest parts of the nebulae do they appear almost completely dark, as no light from the stars behind them penetrates through. This scene in the constellation Aquila is characterized by countless colorful stars that seem to form a sea of sand.
