IC 4592 Blue Horsehead Nebula
Details
IC 4592 also called The Blue Horsehead Nebula is a reflection nebula in the constellation of Scorpius.
The blue horse’s head owes its name to its appearance, which is similar to a large horse’s skull. In contrast to the well-known Horsehead Nebula, however, the Blue Horsehead is much larger. It covers an area of 3×1.5 degrees in the sky, for comparison: the full moon measures about half a degree in the sky.
The dark cloud that forms this nebula belongs to the Antares or Rho Ophiuchi region and runs exactly parallel to the dark nebulae that the Antares region appears to be trailing behind it.
This reflection nebula owes the blue light of IC 4592 to the star Nu Scorpii, a system of seven stars whose main component v Scorpii A is a B3V star.
At the top right is another reflection nebula, IC4601.
